INOLEX Secures European Patent for Eco-Friendly Preservation Technology

With the recent publication of European Patent EP3075401B1, Inolex is expanding the scope of its platform for sustainable and safe preservation. The patent covers methods of using the compositions to protect against microbiological growth as well as paraben-free multifunctional compositions for topical cosmetic, toiletry, and pharmaceutical formulations that require a vicinal diol and caprylhydroxamic acid.

Additionally, Inolex officials announced the expansion of its range of SpectrastatTM preservation products to include SpectrastatTM CHA, a powdered chelating agent that is 100% natural and not derived from palm oil.

It is essential to combine caprylhydroxamic acid (CHA) with a vicinal diol, also known as a Medium Chain Terminal Diol (MCTD), when constructing preservation systems to provide optimal product protection. When paired with CHA, a range of MCTDs, including caprylyl glycol, glyceryl caprylate, and caprylyl glyceryl ether, can be employed to provide effective preservation. The combination of materials and the successful preservation of cosmetic products that come from them are described in the recently granted Inolex patent. Under the SpectrastatTM tradename, Inolex offers broad spectrum preservation systems that are built on top of these optimum combinations.

“Inolex’s safe preservation technology combines multiple techniques to create an environment that is inhospitable to microbial growth, known as the hurdle technology approach,” explains Michael J. Fevola, PhD, VP R&D at Inolex. “Hurdle technology is an intelligent combination of different preservation factors or techniques (“hurdles”) to achieve a broad spectrum and reliable preservation effects.”

When SpectrastatTM CHA and MCTD are combined, a highly effective hurdle technology ingredient combination is produced that offers broad spectrum protection against microbial growth in cosmetic formulations across a broad pH range. It is supported by the accurate quality standards of Inolex as well as the company’s vast safety testing portfolio, which has been approved by the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR) Expert Panel.
