HoloSurge Granted €8.9 Million Horizon Europe Funding to Advance Surgical Planning Using Hologram Technology

HoloSurge, a four-year initiative that brings together 14 European leaders in technology and healthcare research with a unifying goal to lower the risk of complications during planned surgery, has been awarded one of the largest EU grants in recent history.

The 8.9 million EUR grant, given by Horizon Europe, a multinational financial body for research and innovation, will support the advancement of organ holographic technology to enable well-informed surgical decision-making.

Currently, liver surgeons may plan and customize surgeries to each patient’s unique anatomy by using interactive 3D holograms of their organs, thanks to technology developed by the Norwegian medical technology company HoloCare.

The Horizon Europe initiative, which has a funding purse of about 80 billion GBP, is focused on supporting research projects that are centered around three key pillars: outstanding science, industry leadership, and societal challenges. Funding options for health research and innovation are available under all three of the Horizon Europe program’s pillars, which is crucial for the NHS. Despite its intention to exit the EU in 2020, the organization claims that the money made possible by the HoloSurge cooperation represents an exciting opportunity for the UK to work with leading European scientists to advance national healthcare systems.

Surgeons can plan procedures more correctly and efficiently by viewing a 3D hologram of a patient’s organ with augmented reality headsets like the Microsoft HoloLens. They can also move, rotate, and enlarge the hologram to observe the organ from above, below, and behind.

The firm officials say that in the future, holograms might be placed on the patient during the actual surgery as a reference point to enhance accuracy and intraoperative navigation.
